• Kids Helping the Planet: Ecover Says, “Thank You” to Our Youngest Eco-Friends!

If you were around in the ‘80s you undoubtedly recall that Whitney Houston song with the line about children being our future. Yes, the one that says: “Teach them well and let them lead the way!” Those lyrics come to mind whenever Ecover hears about young people doing amazing things for the environment! We see it every day – with the right tools and education, kids today are capable of making huge changes in the world.

Earth911 recently highlighted some of these amazing youngsters. The list includes 7-year-old Merit Leighton and 5-year-old Marlowe Peyton of California, who created The Plastic Patrol. Their goal is to educate and motivate kids everywhere to limit plastic consumption while reducing trash and pollution in the oceans. It also highlights 16 year-old Alex Lin of Rhode Island, who has (so far!) overseen the recycling of 300,000 pounds of e-waste with his student-led community service team. He’s quoted as saying “[Re-use]…whatever you can, and upgrade instead of buying something new. Every little bit counts towards helping the environment!”

All across America and the globe, kids are getting motivated and making a difference. Many of these actions are done in conjunction with Earth Day, but some are now going on year-round. It’s amazing what young, open minds and lots of youthful energy can accomplish!

If you know a child who might want to get involved in saving the planet, many organizations such as PBS Kids and the EPA have posted great ideas for what young people can do to help. And if you know an eco-kid, give him or her a pat on the back from us … and share their accomplishments, we’d love to hear about them!
